Ingredients
Scale
- 1 sheet puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 medium apple (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well), thinly sliced
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1 tablespoon butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)
- Fresh thyme (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Puff Pastry
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- If you’re using store-bought puff pastry, unfold it onto a lightly floured surface. If it’s frozen, make sure to let it thaw for about 15-20 minutes.
- Cut the puff pastry into squares (about 4×4 inches) – you should be able to make 8 bundles from one sheet.
2. Assemble the Bundles
- Place a few slices of apple in the center of each pastry square.
- Sprinkle a generous amount of shredded cheddar cheese over the apples.
- Optionally, sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon, salt, and pepper for added flavor.
- Carefully fold the corners of the pastry over the filling, creating a little bundle or pouch. Pinch the seams together to seal the edges.
3. Add the Finishing Touches
- Brush the tops of the pastry with the melted butter to help them achieve a golden, crispy finish.
- For a glossy look, you can brush the bundles with a beaten egg wash (just whisk together the egg with a tablespoon of water and brush it over the top of the pastry).
4. Bake the Bundles
- Place the bundles on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each one.
- Bake for 18-20 minutes or until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffed up. The cheese should be melted, and the apples should be tender.
5. Serve
- Allow the bundles to cool for a few minutes before serving.
- If you like, garnish with a sprig of fresh thyme or a light drizzle of honey for extra flavor.
