Ingredients
Scale
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk (or dairy-free milk like almond or oat milk)
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 4 ounces high-quality dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa)
- 1 tablespoon sugar (adjust based on chocolate sweetness)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Whipped cream (optional, for topping)
- Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
Step 1: Heat the Milk and Cream
- In a small saucepan, combine the milk and heavy cream. Heat over medium heat until it’s hot but not boiling. Stir occasionally to prevent the milk from scorching.
- Once it’s warm (steamy but not boiling), remove the pan from the heat.
Step 2: Melt the Chocolate
- Chop the dark chocolate into small pieces. Add the chocolate pieces to the warm milk and cream mixture. Stir constantly until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth.
- Taste the mixture and add sugar if desired, adjusting to your sweetness preference.
Step 3: Add the Vanilla
- Stir in the vanilla extract, mixing until it’s fully incorporated into the hot chocolate.
Step 4: Serve and Garnish
- Pour the hot chocolate into two mugs.
- Top with a dollop of whipped cream if you like, and sprinkle with chocolate shavings or a dusting of cocoa powder for a decorative touch.
