Scale
For the Chili:
- 1 lb ground beef (or turkey for a lighter option)
- 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 packet chili seasoning mix (or homemade chili seasoning)
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Dogs:
- 6 hot dog buns
- 6 beef or turkey hot dogs (your choice of variety)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or your favorite cheese)
Instructions
Prepare the Chili
- Cook the Meat: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and fully cooked (about 5-7 minutes).
- Add the Seasonings: Stir in the chili seasoning mix and tomato sauce. Add water, beans, salt, and pepper to taste. Let the chili simmer on low for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
Assemble the Chili Cheese Dogs
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Prepare the Hot Dog Buns: Place the hot dog buns in a baking dish, making sure they’re snug together to hold the chili and cheese in place.
- Add the Hot Dogs: Place a hot dog in each bun.
- Top with Chili: Spoon a generous amount of chili over each hot dog, making sure to cover them well.
- Add the Cheese: Sprinkle a hearty handful of shredded cheese over the chili-covered dogs.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Serve the Chili Cheese Dogs
- Garnish and Enjoy: Once the cheese is melted, remove from the oven and let cool for a couple of minutes. Serve the chili cheese dogs with optional toppings like jalapeños, sour cream, or chopped onions.
- Pair with Sides: Serve with your favorite sides like crispy fries, a fresh salad, or coleslaw to round out the meal.
