Canned Refried Beans

  • Author: Martha
  • Total Time: 10 min.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Basic Refried Beans:

  • 1 can refried beans (16 oz)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
  • 1/4 cup water or vegetable broth (optional for thinning)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For Extra Flavor (Optional):

  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup diced onion (optional)
  • 1/4 cup shredded cheese (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice (optional)

Instructions

1. Heat the Beans

  • Open the can of refried beans and pour them into a small to medium saucepan.
  • Heat the saucepan over medium heat for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.

2. Add Olive Oil or Butter

  • Once the beans start warming up, add a tablespoon of olive oil or butter. Stir well to incorporate it into the beans, creating a smooth and creamy texture.

3. Thin the Beans (Optional)

  • If the beans are too thick for your liking, add a little water or vegetable broth to achieve your desired consistency. Stir to combine.

4. Add Flavor

  • This is the fun part! If you’d like to jazz up your beans, add the optional seasonings: cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, and diced onions. Stir well and continue heating until the beans are fully warmed through, about 1-2 minutes.

5. Taste and Adjust

  • Taste the beans and adjust seasoning as needed, adding more salt, pepper, or spices to suit your taste.

6. Serve

  • Serve the beans immediately as a side dish, or use them in tacos, burritos, or enchiladas. You can top with cheese, cilantro, or a squeeze of lime juice for extra flavor.
