Cast Iron Skillet Burgers

  • Author: Martha
  • Total Time: 20 min.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Burgers:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)
  • 4 burger buns (your choice of type)
  • 4 slices cheese (cheddar, Swiss, or your favorite)
  • Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, ketchup, mustard, mayo

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Patties

  1. Form the Patties: Take the ground beef and divide it into four equal portions. Roll them into balls and then gently flatten them into patties about 1/2 inch thick. Make a small indent in the center of each patty with your thumb—this helps the burgers cook evenly and prevents them from puffing up in the middle.
  2. Season: Generously season both sides of the patties with salt and pepper. This will enhance the flavor and give you that delicious, savory crust.

Step 2: Heat the Cast Iron Skillet

  1. Preheat the Skillet: Place your cast iron skillet on the stove and heat it over medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes. The skillet needs to be hot to get that perfect sear on the burgers.
  2. Add Oil: Once the skillet is hot, add the olive oil and swirl it around to coat the bottom evenly.

Step 3: Cook the Burgers

  1. Place the Patties in the Skillet: Carefully place the burger patties in the hot skillet. You should hear a sizzle as they hit the pan.
  2. Cook the First Side: Let the burgers cook for about 3-4 minutes on the first side without moving them around. This allows a nice crust to form.
  3. Flip the Burgers: Use a spatula to flip the patties over and cook the other side for another 3-4 minutes. For well-done burgers, cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
  4. Add Cheese: In the final minute of cooking, add a slice of cheese to each patty and cover the skillet with a lid. This will help the cheese melt evenly.

Step 4: Toast the Buns

While the burgers are cooking, slice your buns in half and toast them in a separate pan or on a griddle for 1-2 minutes until they’re golden and slightly crispy.

Step 5: Assemble the Burgers

Once the burgers are cooked to your desired doneness, it’s time to assemble:

  1. Place the Patty on the Bun: Place each cheesy patty on the bottom half of a toasted bun.
  2. Add Toppings: Layer your favorite toppings—lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, and sauces.
  3. Top with the Other Bun: Place the top bun over your loaded burger.
