Creamy Korean Ssamjang

  • Author: Martha
  • Total Time: 10 min.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Ssamjang Base:

  • 3 tablespoons gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey or sugar (to balance the heat)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar

For the Creamy Twist:

  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise or Greek yogurt (for a lighter option)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Ssamjang Base

  1. Combine the Base Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, add the gochujang, soy sauce, sesame oil, honey (or sugar), minced garlic, and rice vinegar. Stir until everything is well combined. You should have a smooth, glossy paste that’s thick yet spreadable.
  2. Taste and Adjust: Taste your base mixture and adjust the seasoning as needed. If you like it spicier, add more gochujang; if you want it sweeter, add a bit more honey or sugar.

Add the Creamy Twist

  1. Incorporate the Cream: Stir in the mayonnaise or Greek yogurt to the base mixture. The sauce should now have a creamy, velvety texture with a hint of tang from the yogurt (if using). If you want it extra creamy, feel free to add a bit more mayo or yogurt until you reach your desired consistency.
  2. Optional Garnish: For an extra touch of flavor and texture, sprinkle in some sesame seeds. This adds a nice crunch and a boost of nuttiness.
