Grilled Cheese Sandwich

  • Author: Martha
  • Total Time: 10 min.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Sandwich:

  • 4 slices of your favorite bread (white, whole wheat, sourdough, or rye)
  • 2 tablespoons butter (or margarine, if you prefer)
  • 4 slices of cheese (cheddar, American, or a mix of your favorites)

Instructions

Prepare the Sandwiches

  1. Butter the Bread: Start by buttering one side of each slice of bread. Be generous – you want that golden crust! Spread it evenly from edge to edge.
  2. Assemble the Sandwich: Place one slice of cheese on the unbuttered side of each slice of bread. Layer two slices of cheese on each slice of bread for maximum cheesiness.
  3. Put It Together: Close the sandwich, making sure the buttered sides are facing outwards.

Grill the Sandwich

  1. Heat the Pan: Heat a non-stick skillet over medium-low heat. If you have a griddle, that’s even better for making multiple sandwiches at once!
  2. Grill the First Side: Place the sandwich in the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes, pressing down gently with a spatula to ensure even grilling. Check the bottom by lifting it up slightly – it should be golden brown.
  3. Flip the Sandwich: Once the first side is crispy and golden, flip the sandwich over carefully and grill the other side for another 3-4 minutes.
  4. Check for Melting: You’ll know your grilled cheese is done when the cheese is fully melted and the bread is perfectly toasted on both sides.
